Developmental toys for infants
Child psychologists present different theories when it comes to infants’ cognitive development. One of the earliest behavioral psychologists maintained that an infant can be conditioned into anything a parent desires if attention is given to the child early enough. Others believed infants are more than small spongers that can absorb concepts. One of the most popular cognitive development theories set forth states that children go through certain stages, beginning with the sensorimotor and pre-operational stages.
Many parents and daycare centers have even used these concepts as guide to handling kids and choosing learning tools, including developmental toys for infants. During the sensorimotor stage – that stage when babies normally use skills they were born with, like looking, grasping, listening and assimilating things from their surroundings – toys that encourage touching & movement are best.
Developmental toys for infants that encourage them to use their hands and legs are highly recommended. An activity gym with soft bright-colored non-toxic toys with engaging patterns and musical toys are good examples. Studies actually show that introducing a child to music at an early age fosters creative thinking while contributing to a relaxed and cheerful disposition.
By the time a normally functioning baby turns one, he/she begins taking things apart, pushing, climbing, grabbing things, and walking more steadily, in which case push or pull-along toys become handy. The child is also likely to keep pouring things in and out of containers, so stacking toys or those which combine several benefits in one may be good finds.
The preoperational stage or toddlerhood is when children begin exhibiting use of symbols, and are gearing for large muscle play. Hence, bouncing toys, riding toys, picture books and more musical toys that aid in socio-emotional growth and language development are best.
